Maximizing the number of dual-cycle operations of quay cranes in container terminals

چکیده
An important objective of all schedules in a port is to minimize turnaround time of vessels. An operation schedule for Quay Cranes (QCs) can significantly affect the turnaround time of a vessel. Recently dual cycling techniques have already been used for reducing the number of operation cycles of QCs in some advanced container terminals. This study attempts to minimize the number of operation cycles of a QC for discharging and loading containers in a ship-bay, which is equivalent to maximizing the number of dual cycle operations. A formulation in QC scheduling problems is proposed as a mixed integer programming model. A hybrid heuristic approach is proposed to solve this model. The algorithm applied in this study takes two types of sequencing into account, i.e. inter-stage sequencing (hatch sequencing) and intra-stage sequencing (stack sequencing in the same hatch). This approach hybridizes a certain reconstructive Johnson’s rule with an effective local search method. Finally, certain data in real cases are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Ó 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Quay Cranes and Yard Trucks Scheduling Problem at Container Terminals
A bi-objective mathematical model is developed to simultaneously consider the quay crane and yard truck scheduling problems at container terminals. Main real-world assumptions, such as quay cranes with non-crossing constraints, quay cranes’ safety margins and precedence constraints are considered in this model. This integrated approach leads to better efficiency and productivity at container te...
متن کاملYard Crane Pools and Optimum Layouts for Storage Yards of Container Terminals
As more and more container terminals open up all over the world, competition for business is becoming very intense for container terminal operators. They are finding out that even to keep their existing Sea Line customers, they have to make them happy by offering higher quality service. The quality of service they can provide depends on their operating policies and the design of the terminal la...
متن کاملOptimal Allocation of Ships to Quay Length in Container Ports
Due to the continuously increasing container trade, many terminals are presently operating at or close to capacity. An efficient terminal is one that facilitates the quick transshipment of containers to and from ships. In this sake, this paper addresses the ship assignments problem at a maritime container terminal, where ships are normally assigned to specific quay cranes until the work is fini...
متن کاملAddressing a Coordinated Quay Crane Scheduling and Assignment Problem by Red Deer Algorithm
Nowadays, there is much attention for planning of container terminals in the global trade centers. The high cost of quay cranes motivates both scholars and industrial practitioners especially in the last decade to develop novel optimization models to address this dilemma. This study proposes a coordinated optimization model to cover both Quay Crane Scheduling Problem (QCSP) and Quay Crane Assig...
متن کاملA Quay Crane Scheduling Model in Container Terminals
This paper discusses the problem of scheduling quay cranes, the most important equipment in port terminals. A simulation model is developed for evaluating time of quay cranes. Then a dynamic scheduling model using objective programming for quay cranes is developed based on genetic algorithm approach. Finally, numerical experiments on a specific container terminal are made for propose approach. ...
